Dark Lines, Smudges or Streaks in One or All Colors
Solution: Resolving Dark Lines, Smudges or Streaks in One or All Colors

  1. Verify that the paper / media meets the printer's specifications.

      Tray Specifications:
      Tray 1-Multipurpose (MPT) and trays 2-4 support Plain Paper 64-130 g/m2 (17-32lb Bond), Glossy Coated paper 120-163 g/m2 (81-110lb Text), Letterhead 85-130 g/m2 (22-32 lb Bond).

Thin/Thick Cardstock, Envelopes, Photo Paper, Business and Greeting Cards, CD/DVD Labels and Inserts are to ONLY be printed from Tray 1 (MPT).

Labels and Transparencies are supported for printing from Tray 1 (MPT) and Tray 2 only. See the following link for more information on Weights, Sizes and Types/Paper Tips Page. Many print quality issues can be traced to incorrect paper being used or the paper type setting is incorrect for the tray.

    1. Print the Troubleshooting Print Quality pages and use the CMYK Test Page included to help determine if the print quality issue is application or printer related. If the problem is present on this page the issue is related to the printer.

  2. Ensure the paper loaded in the tray matches the paper type selected on the printer's front panel and in the printer driver. For trays 2-4 slide the tray out half way and push it back in. The printer will prompt you to select the paper/media type. Press the OK button after selecting the proper type.
  3. Check that the transfer roller waste bin is not full.
  4. Replace the imaging unit.

  5. Note: Replacing the imaging unit will normally fix this problem. If the paper is out of specifications for the printer or the paper type setting is not correct the problem will return. Some Linen and Recycled papers can cause the Imaging Unit rollers to be contaminated in which the Imaging unit will need to be replaced and if another paper is not used the problem will return.

  6. Understanding light lines with a new imaging unit.
